QLRC review report shares lawyer insights

Lawyers and police have contributed to the second research report by the Queensland Law Reform Commission about its review into non-fatal strangulation.

Research report 2: Investigating, prosecuting and defending non-fatal strangulation in Queensland: The experiences of police and lawyers, released today, shares insights from 42 officers and practitioners about Section 315A of the Queensland Criminal Code, which concerns the offence of choking, suffocation or strangulation in a domestic setting.

The research participants were identified with help from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service, the Bar Association of Queensland, Legal Aid Queensland, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Queensland Police Service.

The review was launched in November last year, and last month completed its statewide consultation-paper roadshow, having met with stakeholders including victim-survivors, domestic violence agencies, health practitioners, sporting bodies, and academics.
