Long-standing Gold Coast firm Collas Moro Ross has been renamed Collas Moro Ross Barron as it marks its 75th anniversary.

Consultant Gino Moro, Partner Bill Ross and Partner Chris Barron made the announcement this week.

Mr Barron said: “As we enter our 75th year of practice, this rebrand reflects the next chapter in our partnership and our legacy which we are proud to continue.

“While the name has changed (slightly), what hasn’t is the firm’s commitment to its clients and the Gold Coast community it has proudly served since 1951.

“The team remains the same. The values remain the same. The dedication to providing expert, personalised legal solutions with integrity remains unchanged.”

Founded in 1951 by war veteran Peter Collas and David Hill in Miles, western Queensland, the firm established its first Gold Coast office in 1953.

A World War II veteran, Mr Collas completed his law degree at University of Queensland before being employed in 1951. He had started preliminary reading of the law during his time as a prisoner of war through books sourced via the Red Cross.

In the post-war period, the labour market was tight. Recently graduated solicitors wanting work would place an advertisement in the newspaper calling for prospective opportunities.

Mr Hill answered the advertisement published by Mr Collas with a single line letter: “I saw your ad. I want to see you.”

The firm soon moved to Burleigh Heads, which was then a seaside village on the Gold Coast, then known as the South Coast.

Mr Hill and Mr Collas hung their shingle under a house at Burleigh Heads in what was Mr Hill’s late mother’s home. Their then Partner, Ray Bradley, also a veteran, remained at Miles.

The firm progressively built its reputation and client base, and was instrumental in bringing through the profession leaders, both past and current. Among them were Mr Moro, Ian Short, Colin Greatorix, and Michael Bauman.

Over the decades, the firm has been shaped by its partners – Mr Moro, who retains his presence today after 50 years’ service; Mr Ross, who started his articles under Mr Collas in 1980 and remains a Partner; and Mr Barron, who was admitted to the partnership in 2022 after joining the firm in 2017.

Mr Moro also received honorary Queensland Law Society membership in March 2024. He joined the firm after in 1973. He became a partner in 1977.

Collas Moro Ross Barron provides legal services across litigation, commercial law, insolvency, property law, family law, wills and estates, and personal injury.
