Queensland Law Society members are invited to attend a defamation seminar as part of the Federal Court of Australia’s 50th Anniversary National Practice Area Seminar Series.
On 7 October 2026, former Federal Court judge, the Honourable Tony Besanko KC, will present Federal jurisdiction in defamation actions and related proceedings.
During his 18 years on the Federal Court, Mr Besanko presided over many significant defamation proceedings at trial and on appeal, including Roberts-Smith v Fairfax Media Publications Pty Ltd (No 41) [2023] FCA 555; 417 ALR 267 and Australian Broadcasting Corporation v Chau Chak Wing [2019] FCAFC 125.
He will reflect on the development of the Court’s defamation jurisdiction and contemporary issues arising from recent decisions.
There are several ways to view the seminar.
It will be held in person in Adelaide (registration required by 2 October), via a livestream viewing session in the Brisbane Federal Court registry at 4.30pm (RSVP to fca.50thanniversary@fedcourt.gov.au by 2 October) or online via the Federal Court of Australia’s YouTube channel (no registration required).
