Chief Judge’s welcome ceremony to be televised across Queensland

A ceremony to welcome new Queensland District Court Chief Judge Brian Devereaux SC has attracted so much interest the Brisbane event is scheduled to be beamed live into courts across the state.

Brisbane-based legal practitioners and members of the public were earlier this week invited to the welcome ceremony for Chief Judge Devereaux SC in Brisbane’s QEII Courts of Law complex at 9.15am tomorrow.

A court spokeswoman today told Proctor Online the event had become so popular the ceremony would now be live-streamed into courts in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Kingaroy, Maroochydore, Roma, Ipswich, Southport and Beenleigh.

The ceremony is currently scheduled to be held in Brisbane’s ceremonial Banco Court. However, due to COVID-19 safety measures there is no capacity to accommodate anyone in the Banco Court who is not a formally invited guest.

As a result, Courtroom 23 on Level 7 will be made available for legal practitioners and the general public to view the ceremony. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Chief Judge Devereaux succeeds Chief Judge Kerry O’Brien – who officially retired from the bench after more than 30-years on the District Court earlier this week.
