The Women Lawyers Association of Queensland (WLAQ) recognised a legal luminary at its Awards Dinner in Brisbane on Saturday.
Queensland Law Reform Commission Chair Fleur Kingham was named the Leneen Forde AC Woman Lawyer of the Year at the sold-out event at Cloudland, Fortitude Valley.
This award recognises a woman who is a leader in the profession and who has contributed to the advancement of women by her work and other activities.
Ms Kingham’s distinguished legal career includes being a member of the Land Court (2004-06), Deputy President of the Land and Resources Tribunal (2000-06), the first Deputy President of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) (2009-2012) and holding commissions in the Childrens Court of Queensland (2006-2016) and the Planning and Environment Court (2006-2016).
She was appointed a judge of the District Court of Queensland in 2006.
The Regional Woman Lawyer of the Year Award went to Kylie Devney, Managing Director of Central Queensland firm VAJ Byrne & Co Lawyers; and the Emergent Woman Lawyer of the Year Award went to Legal Aid Queensland lawyer Hayley Fox.
Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Catherine Holmes AC SC won the Woman of Excellence Award, and former High Court Chief Justice Susan Kiefel AC KC was appointed an honorary member of the WLAQ.
The Legal Aid Queensland Equitable Briefing Award was won by Jurgensen Home Lawyers, Caboolture.
Special guests at the dinner included Chief Justice Helen Bowskill, Chief Magistrate Janelle Brassington, former Court of Appeal Justice Margaret McMurdo AC, Leneen Forde AC, former Supreme Court Justice Roslyn Atkinson AO, Supreme Court Justice Melanie Hindman, and Department of Justice and Attorney-General Director-General Jasmina Joldic.
