Action on the high seas for JCU talk

Adjunct Senior Research Fellow Dr Michael Underdown will speak about maritime law for the JCU Law Seminar Series.

Law meets action on the high seas for James Cook University’s (JCU) Law Seminar Series this week.

Adjunct Senior Research Fellow Dr Michael Underdown will present Hot Pursuit on Thursday, May 29, when he will discuss the legal and operational complexities of hot pursuit on the water.

Michael will recount the dramatic pursuit of two illegal fishing vessels from Australia’s sub-Antarctic waters to the edge of South Africa. This high-stakes chase showcases how international law allows coastal states to enforce their laws far beyond their borders.

Michael studied Law and Oriental Studies in Australia, Belgium, Portugal and Germany and, in addition to academic appointments in Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, has held research fellowships in the Soviet Union, United Kingdom, China and South Korea.

He is admitted to the High Courts of Australia and New Zealand and has practised as both a solicitor and barrister, specialising in maritime, port and fisheries law, and was a Special Counsel at Clayton Utz.

The free seminar will be held online and at JCU Cairns, Nguma-bada campus, Smithfield, at 11am. The one-hour presentation is worth one CPD point.
