Women’s Legal Service Queensland (WLSQ) is dancing with joy after raising $877,690 via its annual black-tie event on Saturday night.

The 11th Dancing CEOs event drew more than 850 people to Brisbane City Hall, where Brisbane Principal Natalie Powell was among 15 leaders to perform in support of the community legal centre.

The Brisbane solicitor, who works primarily in family law and domestic violence litigation, has strong ties to the WLSQ where she once worked and has volunteered for more than a decade.

The money raised will be used to fund a graduate program to employ emerging lawyers.

WLSQ CEO Nadia Bromley said the service helped about 14,000 women every year.

“These funds mean that we can mentor emerging legal talent and expand access to free legal help for women experiencing domestic and family violence wherever they are across our state,” Nadia said.

The event was held in May as part of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month and at the end of the week when coercive control became a crime in Queensland.

“DFV impacts our friends, our neighbours, our colleagues – people in every community,” Nadia said.

“The new lawyers that we are able to employ with the money raised are ready to stand up and be that voice, support and give hope to those vulnerable women and their children.

“Dancing CEOs is more than one performance; it’s a powerful act of community.”
