Judge to deliver free climate lecture

The Chief Judge of the NSW Land and Environment Court will talk climate law at a free public lecture in Brisbane later this month.

Justice Brian Preston will present The role of solidarity in addressing climate injustice on Wednesday, 30 July, at QUT’s Gardens Point campus, with commentary from Queensland Law Reform Commission Chair Fleur Kingham.

The lecture will explore how the exploitation of fossil fuels by the richest countries has led to a crisis of inequality. It will explain how this injustice can be addressed by the global community through solidarity, manifested in international climate action, climate law and climate litigation.

Before being appointed in 2005, Justice Preston was a Senior Counsel practising primarily in New South Wales in environmental, planning, administrative and property law.

He has lectured in post-graduate environmental law for more than 30 years and has been involved in international environmental consultancies and capacity-building programs, including for judiciaries throughout Asia, Africa and the European Union.

In 2023, he was awarded the Medal of Honour by the World Jurist Association at the United Nations in New York and was granted Life Membership by LAWASIA. He was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Australia Day Honours List 2025.

The lecture will be held from 5.30pm to 7pm. Registrations close 23 July.
