Legal profession boasts 12pc growth

Queensland’s legal profession continues to grow with 2897 solicitor law practices in 2024-2025, representing a 12 per cent increase according to the Legal Services Commission annual report.

The LSC Annual Report 2024-25 was tabled in Parliament this month also revealing that there were 918 sole practitioners or partnerships, a 7.5 per cent increase from the last reporting period, and represented 31.69 per cent of all solicitor law practices.

Of that total 1964 were incorporated legal practices (ILPs), a 14.79 per cent increase from the last reporting period and represented 67.79 per cent of all solicitor law practices. There were 15 multi-disciplinary practices.

All data on solicitors and barristers in the state is provided by the Queensland Law Society and Bar Association of Queensland. This data does not include those government legal officers who do not hold a practising certificate.

At 30 June 2025, there were 17,402 legal practitioners who held practising certificates in Queensland, including 23 registered foreign lawyers. This overall number is an increase of 5.78 per cent on the previous year. Of this total, 16,188 were solicitors, including foreign registered lawyers, and 1214 were barristers.

There continues to be strong female representation in the solicitors branch. Of the combined total of solicitors and barristers, 9570 legal practitioners identify as female (54.99 per cent) and 7803 legal practitioners identify as male (44.84 per cent).

Within the separate branches of the profession, female legal practitioners make up 57.01 per cent of solicitors and 28.17 per cent of barristers, and male legal practitioners make up 42.82 per cent of solicitors and 71.83 per cent of barristers.

Also, 29 solicitors do not specify their gender, which is 0.17 per cent of all practitioners.
