New Human Rights Commissioner named

Former Queensland Police Service Assistant Commissioner Deborah Platz APM has been appointed as the state’s new Human Rights Commissioner.

Ms Platz commences a five-year term on 30 January 2026.

Her most recent role was the New South Wales State Emergency Service Deputy Commissioner Operations.

Her contribution to the SES was preceded by her QPS role where she led the management and prevention of terrorism threats and security-related matters.

Ms Platz has devoted most of her career to the public service and law enforcement, starting as a Constable in 1985 before becoming a detective with the Child Protection and Investigation Unit.

Her career also includes roles in the Australian Federal Police (AFP), including as Assistant Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner Operations, where she led an international team to combat complex organised crime and developed workplace culture training programs.

Ms Platz said her new appointment represented more than a career move.

“This role is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully and align my work with a vision that inspires and provides better outcomes for all Queenslanders,” she said.

“I am energised by the opportunity to step into this new role that presents a challenge while allowing me to draw on my extensive experience.

“I know how to deliver results and am ready to bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions that will enhance performance and drive meaningful outcomes.”

Attorney-General Deb Frecklington said Ms Platz was an experienced and compassionate leader.

“I am confident she will make a significant contribution to the Queensland community in the years ahead,” the Attorney-General said.

“Throughout her public service career, she has seen firsthand the negative consequences of human rights abuses. This experience is invaluable when advocating for fairness, justice, and safety for all Queenslanders.”
