The significance of a legislated right to housing will be highlighted at a free Human Rights Law Association (HRLA) seminar in Brisbane on Wednesday.
The Right to Housing will have speakers including former Victorian Supreme Court Judge the Honourable Kevin Bell KC, Australian Capital Territory President and Human Rights Commissioner Dr Penelope Mathew and Brisbane barrister Lachlan Grant with Queensland Deputy Human Rights Commissioner Jane Vasey as chair.
The panel will discuss how Australian courts and parliaments have increasingly recognised a person’s “right” to housing and home, particularly when it is subject to interference by governments.
It will examine how the ACT and Queensland Supreme Courts have found the right to privacy, family or home protected in the Human Rights Act of those states, and how the ACT has legislated a right to housing that will start in 2027.
