Lawyers face tough questions

Lawyers are usually the ones throwing out the questions but on Wednesday night it was the other way around at the Queensland Law Society Trivia Night Networking event.

The sold-out event, supported by major partner Law Staff and run by Trivia Mill, attracted 16 teams with more than 110 eager trivia buffs at the Stock Exchange Hotel in Brisbane.

The winning teams were: The Unintended Consequences, 95 points (Legal Policy team) first; Neigh Sayers, 92 points (Workhorse Advisory) second, Mares ipsa loquitur, 91 points (The Budden Family team) third; and the wooden gavel went to The Wednesbury Unreasonables, 68 points (Holding Redlich).

QLS Director Advocacy and Legal Policy Binari De Saram said the team name was “inspired by the fact that in our role as policy solicitors, we scrutinise bills to determine if the proposed legislation will have any unintended consequences”.

“We thought the name struck the right pun to nerdy ratio,” she said.

“This is the first time the legal policy team has entered a team into a competition. However, trivia is a much-loved, long-standing tradition within the legal policy team.

“Trivia brings our team together, encourages conversation and solidifies that we are lifelong learners. Happily I have the privilege to work alongside a team of brilliant solicitors and law students who have a shared love of trivia and traditions – which will hopefully mean that we will enter a team next year.”

Binari was also happy to break her “personal trivia curse”.

“My husband and I have been a part of three previous trivia teams for my daughter’s schools,” she said. “We have lost by one point each time and have placed second these three times. This is the first time I have been a part of a winning trivia team.”
