Cairns law library improves offerings

The Supreme Court Library Queensland in Cairns reopened in May 2024 with improved service offerings.

Located on Level 3 of the Courts Complex in Cairns CBD, the law library is pleased to be providing legal information services and a welcoming space for the legal profession in the Cairns region once again.

A steady number of legal practitioners have come through the doors to access the physical collection, which include essential texts like Carter’s criminal law of Queensland, Cross on evidence and various law reports.

The most common information and research requests have related mostly to property and succession law, followed by contract law and consumer protection with a small portion of requests relating to family law.

An experienced librarian is also on site at the Cairns library three days a week to manage and maintain the library, the physical collection and other resources, and to provide a high level of customer service and support.

While the size and contents of our physical collection have largely remained the same, new books will now be sent and added more frequently.

Upgrades in technology meant having a dedicated library wifi connection to provide fast and direct on-site access to all of the library’s subscribed legal research resources online, along with brand new computers and a printer.

The library catalogue is also complete and kept up-to-date with new systems in place for accurate records.

Access to the Cairns library is currently only open to legal practitioners, members of the judiciary and law students (third-year and postgraduate).

We also hope to bring other popular service offerings in Brisbane, such as our secondary school and community education programs and the legal research training sessions, to the region in the future.

Plans to reopen our other libraries in Rockhampton and Townsville are underway to further our mission of providing legal information services to the local judiciary, legal profession and community to serve the administration of justice in Queensland.
