The diversity of life as a regional lawyer was on show at the Queensland Law Society’s Legal Careers Expo in Brisbane yesterday afternoon.

More than 200 law students and graduates mingled at Rydges South Bank to chat with exhibitors including PLT providers, firms, government agencies and the Supreme Court Library.

Among the exhibitors was “Industry Insider” Rio Ramos, who made the trek from Gladstone to attend.

The Gladstone District Law Association President volunteered at the event to offer insights, saying the expo was a great platform to showcase the rewarding aspects of a career and a lifestyle outside cities.

She also said the experience was inspiring and at the same time grounding.

“I was able to demonstrate what it was like for me as a new law graduate and what had led me to live in the regional area,” the director at Ramos & Co Lawyers said.

“There was genuine curiosity from students and graduates about regional pathways, and many inquisitive emerging lawyers.

“They were so eager to learn about the quality of life and professional development that regional areas can provide.”

Rio said events such as the annual expo were incredibly valuable for both parties.

“For students and graduates, it opens up opportunities they may not have considered otherwise,” she said.

“For regional employers and communities, it’s a chance to connect with fresh talent, shift perceptions, and build future capacity.

“These events also help to bridge the gap between potential and place – turning interest into action.

“I’d encourage more regional representatives to get involved – sharing real stories and showing what’s possible can truly affect perceptions of regional areas.”

The expo, which was supported by Principal Partner College of Law and Major Partners Bond University and the Department of Justice, included panel sessions on building a brand, what recruiters look for, and career pathways. It also offered Resume Rescue and LinkedIn Lifesaver sessions, and was capped off with an “Hour of Power Networking Drinks”.
