Indigenous violence forum gathers voices

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women’s voices will be placed at the centre of preventing indigenous family violence at a forum on the Gold Coast next week.

Queensland Indigenous Family Violence Legal Service (QIFVLS) has gathered a range of speakers from around the nation for its third annual Overcoming Indigenous Family Violence national forum, to be held from 27-29 May at QT Hotel.

Speakers include Greens Senator Dorinda Cox, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Katie Kiss, QIFVLS Principal Legal Officer Thelma Schwarz, university professors and representatives from indigenous legal services from around the country.

Topics include self-determination for indigenous women, coercive control legislation, national frameworks, learning from lived experience, justice reinvestment, gender equality, child protection, and behaviour change; with workshops on topics including weaving, leadership and sexual violence.

QIFVLS CEO and First Nations Advocates Against Family Violence Chair Wynetta Davis, who will open the conference, said the event was a crucial platform for collaboration, given there had been significant developments in the area of indigenous family violence.

“We have witnessed the continued emergence of community-driven initiatives that prioritise cultural healing, early intervention, and support for families and individuals experiencing violence,” Wynetta said.

“Increasingly, Elders and cultural leaders are being recognised as key agents of change, and collaboration between governments, service providers, and First Nations communities has strengthened.”

The forum’s on-country workshop, at Jellurgal in Burleigh Heads National Park, has sold out.

The forum is worth seven CPD points. Register here.
