Judge to share court career path

Her Honour Judge Balic will share her insights into court careers at the next Better Call Sarah event.

Her Honour District Court Judge Dzenita Balic and Senior Judicial Registrar Anne-Marie Rice from the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia will share insights into their career paths at the second Better Call Sarah event next month.

The free Queensland Law Society event for student members on Wednesday, 16 July, will focus on court careers and career paths.

Judge Balic began her formal appointment to the District Court of Queensland on 26 August 2024. Formerly a Magistrate at Southport, Judge Balic began her career as a legal support officer with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

She was then called to the Bar in 2006 and moved through the ODPP ranks to become the Principal Crown Prosecutor at Ipswich, Maroochydore and Brisbane.

Her Honour prosecuted more than 150 criminal trials to verdict and more than 120 appeals in the Court of Appeal. Her Honour also regularly appeared in the Mental Health Court jurisdiction. 

Senior Judicial Registrar Rice has been at the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA) since July 2020 and is also a lecturer in conflict management at the University of Queensland.

Among her achievements are being named the Queensland Law Society Outstanding Accredited Specialist (2019) and the Leneen Forde AC Woman Lawyer of the Year (2018).

The event will again be hosted by Sarah Plasto, who is a lawyer with public and private sector experience, and currently seconded as Acting Director of Program Performance at Housing and Public Works.

Sarah has held senior legal roles at QBCC and Justice & Attorney-General.

A former QLS Future Leaders President, she remains active in mentoring young lawyers and has been at the helm of these events which are designed to given real insights into careers and networking opportunities.

Registrations are now open and this is a complimentary event for QLS student members with limited spaces available.
