Pets in property settlements will be one topic covered in a free Legal Aid Queensland (LAQ) webinar next week.
Changes to the Family Law Act: Property, pets and private information – what you need to know next Thursday will unpack the latest amendments to the Act which became effective last month.
The changes apply to all separating couples, whether their property settlement is determined by the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA), or they are negotiating outside of court.
LAQ Assistant Director of Family Law Services, Mary-Ann Huth, will highlight the changes and how these might work in practice, including:
- what is considered by the court when dividing property and finances after a relationship ends;
- how the economic impacts of family violence can be considered;
- how ownership of pets can be determined by the court, particularly where there is a risk that a pet might be used to perpetrate violence; and
- when the court might prevent sensitive information being made available as evidence.
The one-hour webinar at 1pm on Thursday, 24 July, will include a Q&A session. It will also have live Auslan interpretation.
