Seven members of the Far North Queensland Law Association completed the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course this month (August) in Cairns.

The Queensland Law Society started offering in-house MHFA delivery this year and in April, nine employees from Suncoast Legal Service also completed the MHFA Course for Community at Maroochydore.

Sunshine Coast lawyers also participated in April.

QLS Education Governance and Regulation Lead Stephanie Cowie said any workplace could request an in-house training session for a minimum of six staff.

“Courses qualify for CPD points,” Stephanie said.

“During the course, participants learn how to apply mental health first aid to adults across a range of common mental health problems and crisis situations arising in the legal profession, including depression, anxiety and traumatic events.

“At the completion of the workshop, participants will have the knowledge and understanding of dealing with, recognising, and learning the warning signs of mental health problems in other adults and about how to respond across a wide range of crisis situations where an adult may be at risk or harm.”

Stephanie said the course helped to reduce stigma and increase support for people experiencing mental health issues, and showed how to apply self-care practices as mental health first aider.

Participants learn how to offer support.

Information on the courses is available here and future courses are planned.
