The recipient of this year’s Justin Crosby Memorial Bursary hopes he can honour the legacy of the late practitioner.
University of the Sunshine Coast student Mathew Ness was awarded the $5000 scholarship at the Sunshine Coast Law Association’s annual gala dinner and fundraiser on 9 May.
Mr Ness said at the dinner he discovered the high regard in which Mr Crosby was held in the local community.
“The phrases of ‘highest professional standards’, ‘meticulous advocate’ and ‘one of the most knowledgeable and helpful solicitors’ were commonly shared on the evening,” he said.
“So the award now has me driven to uphold these standards, not only for my benefit but to honour the man behind the award I have just been given.”
Mr Crosby died of cancer in 2013, aged 63, after having practised in Maroochydore for at least 30 years.
The bursary, created in 2014, is open to all first-year Commonwealth-supported students enrolled either full time or part time in the University of the Sunshine Coast Bachelor of Laws program.
Mr Ness said the funds would allow him to widen his study resources, especially in his favoured areas of constitutional law and human rights law.
