Workshop assists setting up your firm’s AML/CTF program

Practitioners can build their compliance-ready AML/CTF Program in a full-day workshop with guidance and support from compliance experts Holley Nethercote.

Hosted by the Queensland Law Society and Holley Nethercote Compliance, the AML in a Day Workshop will guide practitioners to build their AML/CTF Program in just one day – delivering value while ensuring compliance readiness for 1 July.

During the 17 June workshop, attendees will customise their own AML/CTF Program template, including an ML/TF risk assessment, to meet the needs of their firm.

QLS Ethics and Practice Centre Director Grace van Baarle, who presented at the Society’s AML/CTF roadshow events, said those practices who had struggled to understand what was required should seriously consider this workshop as it would assist them in:

  • creating their own AML/CTF Program in real time;
  • turning their mind to who is their governing body and who they should appoint as their AML/CTF compliance officer and senior manager;
  • determining what personnel due diligence of staff and training they need to undertake; and
  • how to conduct customer (client) due diligence as from 1 July.

“Practitioners may feel that the cost is prohibitive, but it would be far more expensive engaging someone to build your own program, and you would do so, without actually understanding why you are doing what you need to do,” Ms van Baarle said.

“The understanding behind how AML/CTF compliance will work within your practice takes time and having someone walk you through this process is invaluable.

“The numbers are limited to enable a hands-on approach by the facilitators.”

Workshop invitations are extended to legal practitioners and support staff who may be involved in implementing the new reforms.

The registration fee covers two attendees from each firm, offering a time-saving solution to building an AML/CTF Program if your firm is captured by the new regime.

Topics covered in this full-day workshop will include:

  • Governance structure;
  • ML/TF risk assessment including a customisable template;
  • Personnel due diligence and staff training;
  • Customer (client) due diligence;
  • Reporting obligations;
  • Program reviews and updates;
  • Independent evaluations.

Attendees will also receive access to the full suite of supporting tools from Holley Nethercote Compliance, including registers, checklists, agendas, and procedures in readiness for the new Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Amendment Act 2024.

The workshop is worth seven CPD points. Registrations close at 12pm on Monday, 15 June, unless sold out prior.

If the full-day format doesn’t suit, QLS is also hosting a half-day online workshop (three CPD points) with international AML/CTF expert Amy Bell on Monday, 22 June, 11.30am–3pm

Ms Bell brings nearly three decades of experience helping law firms navigate money laundering compliance.

The Understanding AML/CTF Requirements workshop will cover AUSTRAC’s compliance expectations, the enrolment process, and setting up your firm’s procedures.  Registrations close on Wednesday, 17 June, unless sold out prior.

QLS and Ms Bell are also hosting a series of free webinars throughout June and July.
