The Public Advocate has made 26 recommendations to address long-standing problems for adults with cognitive disability in the justice system.
Dr John Chesterman’s report, Adults with Cognitive Disability in the Queensland Justice System, was tabled in State Parliament last Friday.
The recommendations relate to accessibility, preventing recidivism, responding to behavioural crises, the redesign of the forensic disability system, screening in prison, and disability services in and out of prison.
They consider victims, witnesses and alleged or convicted perpetrators, and build on the work done by the Disability Royal Commission in 2023.
The two-year project by the Public Advocate involved the publication of five discussion papers between April 2024 and February 2026 on policing, courts, forensic system, detention, and victims and witnesses.
It also involved stakeholder consultation which included 10 roundtable discussions and engagements with individuals and groups.
