A Federal Court decision which changed the landscape for directors’ duties will be unpacked at the Queensland Law Society’s newest conference in Brisbane next week.
Norton Rose Fulbright Brisbane Partner Jenna Scott-Speyers, with Sydney Senior Associate Shaun Buckton, will explain the ASIC v Bekier (Star Entertainment) judgment made in June this year, to kick off the second day of the inaugural Specialist Practice Conference at Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The keynote address will explore the Court’s findings on risk escalation, board reporting, governance oversight, and the evolving role of General Counsel. It will offer practical guidance on managing legal and reputational risks, advising boards, documenting decision-making, and meeting expectations of care and diligence in complex organisational environments.
It is one of more than 60 sessions to be offered over 7, 8 and 9 October at the conference, which has combined the Society’s leading specialist conferences with new areas of practice to form a premier learning and networking event.
The event, worth up to six CPD points, will cover succession and elder law; personal injuries; property and commercial law; government; family law; domestic and family violence; criminal law; migration; and workplace relations and employment law.
It will include a Migration Law Breakfast and a Friday networking function, with an optional family law drafting workshop as an add-on.
