Federal courts act to progress Townsville matters

Queensland Law Society has received advice from the Federal Circuit Court and Family Court regarding their continued support for matters in Townsville as a result of an immediate temporary judicial transfer.

QLS President Luke Murphy today said the FCC and Family Court’s Chief Justice Wil Alstergren had notified the Society about the temporary transfer of Townsville Circuit Court Judge Guy Andrew to Brisbane and of steps being taken to ensure matters proceeded as scheduled in the busy North Queensland jurisdiction.

Mr Murphy said it was understood those measures include additional judge time and resources, as well as registrar resources where necessary.

He said it was expected all matters currently listed between now and Christmas would remain listed to be heard face to face where appropriate.

Judge Michael Jarrett is scheduled to commence hearing cases in the Townsville Registry from Monday 7 September 2020 to Friday 19 September 2020.

Judge Grant Riethmuller is expected to commence sitting in Townsville from Monday 21 September until the end of 2020.

QLS understands the Townsville Registry will continue to always have a judge assigned to it.

The courts have indicated that they are grateful to the members of the profession who have assisted the courts in providing access to justice to litigants.

Mr Murphy said QLS was appreciative of the Chief Justice’s support of the Townsville community and legal profession.

QLS will advise of any further updates.
