Acting President of the Court of Appeal Fiji Justice Isikeli Mataitoga met with Queensland Law Society Immediate Past President Rebecca Fogerty last week.

Acting President of the Court of Appeal Fiji Justice Isikeli Mataitoga with Queensland Law Society Immediate Past President Rebecca Fogerty at Law Society House in Brisbane recently.

One area of focus during Rebecca’s presidency was working closer with neighbouring South Pacific law societies and courts.

Justice Mataitoga’s responsibilities include developing and undertaking CLE courses which were discussed during the meeting.

“Regional engagement with our South Pacific colleagues is an important strategic focus for the QLS,” Rebecca said of last week’s meeting.

“Cross-border engagement allows lawyers to learn from each other’s expertise, improving our ability to navigate complex legal issues and better serve our communities.

“A stronger relationship with our South Pacific neighbours not only strengthens justice in our own communities, but also enhances regional stability and economic growth. It also promotes cultural understanding and trust, which are crucial for resolving disputes and fostering partnerships.”

Rebecca said QLS was “uniquely placed to develop meaningful cross-border relationships in the South Pacific”.

“Queensland is now home to many lawyers and law students who come from South Pacific regions.  By working together and sharing our experiences, we can build a more interconnected and resilient legal community that supports the rule of law and promotes access to justice across the region,” she said.

“In a time of diminishing trust globally in our civic institutions and threats to the rule of law, the importance of strong relationships in the legal professional cannot be understated”.
