National age backstroke champion Abby Schoorl of Murphy’s Law Accident Lawyers understands the ripple effects that accidents have on lives.

The swimmer and law graduate was admitted to the Supreme Court of Queensland on 6 May in Brisbane.

Having received a Bond University scholarship through her swimming achievements, Abby’s discipline in the water is matched only by her drive to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Abby was the Australian Age Champion in 100m backstroke at Age Nationals in 2018. She competed in the Australian swimming trials in backstroke and butterfly in 2023.

Her experiences in the pool have taught her the importance of perseverance and discipline, qualities she now applies in her legal career.

Along with her scholarship, Abby’s academic achievements included an Honours thesis comparing multi-jurisdictional differences in the law for victims of medical negligence.

Abby was one of more than 100 new
lawyers admitted in Brisbane in May.

Abby thanked Murphy’s Law Accident Lawyers Special Counsel Michelle Tomley for moving her admission and said she looked forward to now working under her as a junior lawyer.

“I chose Michelle to move my admission because she has been a great mentor to me with such a wealth of knowledge from which I have already learned so much,” Abby said.

“I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has guided me along the way so far and helped shape the lawyer I am becoming.

“As I begin this next chapter, I’m excited to contribute meaningfully to the profession, advocate for those in need, and continue learning every step of the way.”

Michelle said she enjoyed moving Abby’s admission at the Banco Court last week.

“Moving a new lawyer never gets old, nor does it lose its awe or charm,” Michelle said.

“I was called on to move the admission of Abby Schoorl and watch on as a dear colleague took her oath of office.

“It is one of the most treasured parts of my practise to teach, mentor and work alongside these clever, driven, and excited new lawyers.”

When Abby is not at work or in the pool, she is also learning French and teaching herself knitting.

Abby’s admission comes as Murphy’s Law Accident Lawyers marks its tenth year of operation.
