Queensland Rail General Counsel Rory Kilpatrick began his career in litigation before transitioning to an in-house role at Network Rail in London.

Rory Kilpatrick
A senior legal executive with more than 20 years’ experience across the infrastructure, energy and transport sectors, he will share his insights at the Queensland Law Society In-house Lawyers Breakfast Series on Wednesday, 23 July.
Rory took time out to answer Proctor’s questions before the Customs House event.
What do you enjoy about being In-house Counsel?
“The opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the business and contribute in a way that’s both strategic and value adding – You’re not just a legal advisor, you’re part of the business.
“Not having to complete timesheets is also a bonus!”
Have you always been in interested in transport, or how did you become involved in the sector?
“Interestingly, I ended up in transportation by accident. Whilst living in London I secured my first in-house role with Network Rail – the UK equivalent of Queensland Rail. Prior to that I hadn’t realised that in the UK being a ‘railway lawyer’ was a recognised specialisation.
“Although I consider myself more of an infrastructure lawyer than a transport specialist, I enjoy the customer-centric focus of the transportation sector and the opportunity to contribute directly to projects that deliver real value to the community.”
What would you like the event attendees to take away from the breakfast?
“Hopefully, attendees leave with a better understanding of the nuances between working in the private sector and working within government.
“Whilst working within government certainly comes with a different set of challenges, it also offers the chance to work alongside incredibly talented colleagues who bring a high level of expertise and a strong sense of purpose to what they do. This combination makes for a rewarding and impactful work environment.”
Practitioners can also join the conversation on-line from Townsville at the Queensland Country Centre from 7am-9am. There will be a light breakfast.
