Queensland Supreme Court Justice Paul Smith has been appointed Judge Advocate General and promoted to the rank of Major General.
Justice Smith was a soldier in the Army Reserves from 1980 to 1984. He was commissioned in March 1984, winning the Queensland University Regiment Sword of Honour.
He then served as an infantry officer with the Queensland University Regiment and the 9th Battalion Royal Queensland Regiment before transferring to the Australian Army Legal Corps in 1993.
Justice Smith previously held the rank of Brigadier and was appointed Deputy Judge Advocate General for the Army in 2019.
In 2024 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the Military Division for exceptional service in that role.
He was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland (Trial Division) last year following 12 years of service on the District Court of Queensland where he was Judge Administrator
His Judge Advocate General appointment, announced last week by Governor-General Sam Mostyn, took effect on 13 August for a term of five years.
