Cairns and Townsville legal communities stepped out for this year’s LawRight Queensland Legal Walk despite event cancellations in the south-east corner.
The 19 May walks planned for Brisbane, Ipswich, Toowoomba, the Gold Coast, Mount Tamborine and the Sunshine Coast were impacted by heavy rainfall.
But further north, the walks went ahead contributing to the $127,987 raised so far of the $150,000 target.
For the past 19 years, members of the legal profession have risen early on National Pro Bono Day and walked to raise funds in support of LawRight services.
Beth Rolton, Partner and Cairns Leader at Travis Schultz & Partners, was among those stepping out in Far North Queensland.
“Travis Schultz & Partners has participated in the Legal Walk for a number of years, and when we walk for LawRight it’s about more than raising funds – it’s helping remove barriers to justice within our community,” she said.
“Taking part is a meaningful and important way to give back to those who need it most.”
Legal Aid Queensland staff in Cairns and Townsville joined the walk to support access to justice for vulnerable Queenslanders.
“While wet weather meant the Brisbane walk couldn’t go ahead, our regional teams were out in force, walking alongside their communities to raise awareness for this important cause,” LAQ posted.
“The QLD Law Walk is a reminder of the collective effort it takes to ensure fairness and equality in our legal system. A big thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this shared goal.”
Donations are still being accepted with Clayton Utz and HSF Kramer among the top fundraising teams.
