Australian Pro Bono Centre Senior Policy and Project Officer Sally Embelton is part of a panel which will explore the role solicitors play in supporting access to justice, and how pro-bono work fits into real-world legal practice.
The 20 May event, in partnership with the Queensland Law Society and the Australian Pro Bono Centre, is part of Law Week activities.
Emile McPhee, Hamilton Locke Partner and Deputy Chair of the QLS Access to Justice Pro Bono Committee, will chair the panel which also features Shaun Chng, Clayton Utz Senior Associate, Jaimee-Lee Jessop, Robertson O’Gorman Solicitors Senior Associate, and Joanne Rennick, Murphy Schmidt Managing Principal and Chair of the UQ Pro Bono Centre Advisory Board.
The panel will speak about what motivates them to take on pro-bono work, how they balance pro-bono commitments alongside their day-to-day practice, the challenges they’ve faced getting started and sustaining involvement, and how they’ve worked through them, and the personal and professional value they gain from giving back.
The session will also highlight the support available to solicitors, including guidance and resources from the Australian Pro Bono Centre and Queensland-based organisations and networks offering pro-bono opportunities and support.
Whether already engaged in pro-bono work or considering getting started, this session will provide practical insights and pathways.
In-person attendees are invited to arrive at Law Society House from midday to enjoy a light lunch before the panel starts at 12.30pm. You can also register online for this complimentary session and earn 1.5 CPD points.
