QLS launches campaign to address risks of AI-generated ‘legal advice’

The Queensland Law Society has launched a new public education campaign during Law Week on the You & The Law.

As reliance on artificial intelligence tools and free online resources grows, the campaign For real legal advice, ask a solicitor – on the Society’s platform aimed at the general community – addresses the risks of substituting these searches for professional advice.

It also reinforces the importance of seeking guidance from qualified practitioners.

Since the rapid uptake of generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT, the legal system has seen a marked increase in matters involving individuals who rely on AI-generated material when navigating legal issues. In many cases, this occurs without a proper understanding of the limitations of these tools or the potential implications for their case.

This shift is contributing to inefficiencies across the legal system. Practitioners are increasingly required to review extensive volumes of AI-generated documents provided by clients, often based on incorrect or incomplete assumptions. At the same time, courts and tribunals are managing the flow-on effects, with additional pressures impacting the efficiency and administration of justice more broadly.

In a first for QLS, the campaign employs AI-generated video content to depict everyday legal scenarios. These materials illustrate the risks associated with relying on informal or unverified sources of legal advice.

Central to the campaign is positioning You & The Law as a trusted pathway for Queenslanders to connect with the right solicitor for their needs.

By encouraging earlier engagement with the profession, QLS aims to support better-informed decision-making, improve the efficiency of legal processes, and contribute to stronger outcomes for individuals navigating legal issues.
