New Federal judge for Brisbane

Senior Judicial Registrar Kara Best has been elevated to Judge of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 2).

Ms Best, who will serve at the Brisbane registry, was among six judicial appointments across the country announced yesterday by Commonwealth Attorney-General Michelle Rowland.

Admitted as a barrister in 2001 and a solicitor in 2004, Ms Best began her career in the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions. She then served as an associate to several judicial officers, practised as a family law solicitor and was managing director of a specialist law firm.

She gained Specialist Accreditation in Family Law from the Queensland Law Society in 2007 and served on the Independent Children’s Lawyer Panel at Legal Aid Queensland in 2009. She is also an AIFLAM accredited Mediator and Arbitrator.

She was appointed as a Senior Judicial Registrar in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 1) & (Division 2) in 2021.

Chief Justice Alstergren AO said serving as a registrar “provides unique experience and insight into being a judicial officer and is a matter of great pride for the courts”.

“On behalf of the courts, I am delighted to welcome the appointment of such esteemed and eminently qualified individuals to the bench,” he said.

The other five judges were appointed to the Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Parramatta registries.

The appointments take the total number of Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia judges across both courts nationally to 126.

Ms Best will begin her tenure on 17 September.
