Veteran criminal lawyer named as LAQ Senior Director

Almost 30 years after joining the state’s largest law practice dedicated to helping society’s most disadvantaged, veteran Brisbane criminal lawyer Peter Delibaltas has been named as Legal Aid Queensland’s (LAQ) Senior Director.

LAQ Chief Executive Officer Nicky Davies announced on Friday that Mr Delibaltas had been appointed to the role within Queensland’s publicly funded and largest criminal law practice.

LAQ is responsible for providing free duty lawyer services in more than 100 courts – including the Magistrates, Childrens, Family and Federal Circuit Courts – throughout Queensland.

Mr Delibaltas has held key leadership roles with Legal Aid Queensland, including Director of Criminal Law Services and Acting Deputy CEO, in a career that has spanned nearly three decades with the organisation.

Ms Davies said Mr Delibaltas was highly respected throughout the justice system and an excellent ambassador for LAQ.

“Peter has committed his career to assisting the vulnerable and disadvantaged in our legal system,” Ms Davies said. “He has had an outstanding career as a criminal lawyer, acting for legally-aided clients in many high-profile matters, and as a leader, especially as Director of our Criminal Law Services Division.

“I congratulate Peter on his appointment to this crucial role, which will see him leading our statewide legal practice and driving the delivery of quality legal services for our clients.”

Mr Delibaltas began his career as a listings and briefing officer with the Public Defender’s Office in 1990, before taking up a role as legal officer with Legal Aid Queensland in 1992.

He was appointed Director of the Criminal Law Services Division in 2010 and has been acting in the role of Senior Director, Legal Practice, since July 2020.

Mr Delibaltas said he was excited about his appointment to the role and the opportunity to continue working with legal staff around the state to deliver vital legal services to vulnerable Queenslanders.

“I’m passionate about helping people to access legal services and working with our staff, partners and preferred suppliers to ensure our services are of the highest standard,” he said.

“It is a great privilege to work for this organisation and serve our clients, and I look forward to continuing that work in my new role.”
