Beryl Donkin scholarship applications open

Applications for the second round of the Beryl Donkin Memorial Scholarship Fund for 2023 are now open.

The Women Lawyers Association of Queensland Inc (WLAQ) oversees the scholarship which aims to promote and advance the professional development of women in the state by providing funding towards educational or professional development expenses in an approved course.

For 2023, up to $10,000 may be allocated to recipients who are selected as part of the two rounds of the scholarship.

The fund is named after Beryl Donkin, a long-serving Queensland Law Society (QLS) employee and pioneer in the field despite not being a lawyer.

For more than 40 years she was central to the QLS administration. Appointed in 1941 as the Assistant Secretary, she took on the role during World War Two when membership was reduced and communication with members difficult.

As the first full-time employee, she continued to serve the QLS for 13 years before assuming the statutory position of Secretary in 1954, a position she held for 27 years.
