Due to the ongoing effects of Cyclone Jasper in North Queensland, the Acting Chief Magistrate has approved altered arrangements for Magistrates Courts in accordance with Practice Direction No. 9 of 2023 for today, 14 December.

These arrangements will apply to Magistrates Courts in Atherton, Cairns, Cooktown, Innisfail, Mareeba and Mossman.

Cooktown and Mossman Magistrates Courts will be closed.

Atherton, Cairns, Innsifail and Mareeba Magistrates Courts will be open.

Urgent Domestic and Family Violence: Given the closure of affected court registries, parties will be unable to file any Applications for Protection Orders, including via electronic means.  Any person seeking to apply for an urgent Domestic Violence Order under the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act (Qld) 2012 will only be able to do so by attending a Queensland Police Station. Details of the nearest 24 hour police station can be obtained by calling 131 444.

To and including Friday, 15 December, parties may appear by telephone. If people are unable to appear due to safety issues, flooding, transport problems or any other issue associated with Cyclone Jasper, preferably contact the local registry by email or telephone, and the matter will be adjourned and a Notice of Adjournment will be sent out. Police Prosecutors would ordinarily be expected to appear in person.
