ATSILS resources a group effort

Community Legal Education resources developed by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service will be distributed to partner organisations.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (ATSILS) has tapped into the knowledge of community legal service providers to create education resources for vulnerable clients.

The Community Legal Education (CLE) resources Which Way – Protect Your Legal Rights! were born out of discussions with members of the Queensland Legal Assistance Forum, including Legal Aid Queensland, Queensland Indigenous and Family Violence Legal Service and Community Legal Centres Queensland, as well as Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak.

The agencies identified common legal needs in the various communities and worked together on resources to better equip clients with basic knowledge to uphold their legal rights when dealing with police and child safety services.

The tools, which were designed by First Nations creative agency Gilimbaa, will be shared on social media and distributed to stakeholder and community organisations to display in courts, office receptions, waiting rooms and other public areas.

ATSILS Communications and Sector Engagement Director Graham White launched the resources last month.

“The spirit of collaboration has enabled us to deliver a quality set of highly targeted legal education resources to our communities,” Graham said.

“Fostering this partnership has enabled us to establish an extended funding platform to invest in the development of resources and has also enhanced our communication reach to communities through our partner networks.”

Graham said he hoped it was the first of many collaborative productions under the Which Way banner.
