Queensland Law Society representatives met with LAWASIA President-elect Yap Teong Liang and Secretary-General Dr Gordon Hughs AM earlier this year to discuss mutual engagement and the increasing role of transnational practice between Australia and the Asia Pacific region.

Of particular note was alternative dispute resolution, rule of law issues and cross-border transactions in an increasing connected global economy.

One of QLS President Rebecca Fogerty’s priorities this year is to focus on fostering closer ties in the Asia-Pacific.

QLS is a non-predominant member of LAWASIA and has contributed to the growth and leadership of this association representing the legal community in the Asia-Pacific region.

President Shyam Divan said LAWASIA had recently launched a membership drive directed at recruiting new individual members, which ended on 31 May 2024.

“The membership drive is designed to encourage bulk individual membership through our member organisations. Both the new individual members and the jurisdictional member organisations stand to gain.”

The QLS President said the membership drive envisaged 20 or more new LAWASIA members from Australia. If 20 new members come forward by 31 May 2024, each of these individuals will enjoy a 25 per cent discount on the individual membership fee. If the Society is able to channel 21 or more new individual members, the discount increases to 35 per cent. You can convey your interest in membership by emailing info@qls.com.au. Details needed are title, full name, email address and membership category – one year, three years or life.

Simultaneously, there is a special scheme for those who would like to support LAWASIA by becoming a Lifetime Patron Member. Under this scheme, a life membership is offered at a discounted rate of $2900. This scheme is available to both existing and new LAWASIA members.

For those interested in life membership, there will be an offset against their paid membership fee subject to their individual membership continuing after June 2024.

Members can directly contact the LAWASIA Secretariat at lawasia@lawasia.asn.au The discounted Lifetime Patron Membership scheme is also open until 31 May 2024.
