The Queensland Law Reform Commission (QLRC) is seeking feedback after this week’s release of consultation papers as part of a two-year review of mining lease objection processes.
Reimagining decision-making processes for Queensland mining discusses and invites feedback on six reform proposals with 26 questions, including on key aspects of how the reforms could be implemented.
Valuing the perspectives of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples discusses the same proposals and asks the same questions with a particular focus on issues and implications for Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities.
QLRC Chair Fleur Kingham said: “The law must facilitate industry, recognising the dynamic nature of the mining industry and its significant contribution to the Queensland economy.
“At the same time community must have meaningful opportunities to participate in decision-making processes. Importantly, the interests of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities must be taken into account.”
The Commission seeks the feedback by 13 September 2024.
The Review is one of the actions specified in Queensland Resources Industry Development Plan to improve regulatory efficiency. The Commission is due to report to the Attorney-General on 30 June 2025.
