A former Rockhampton Grammar School student, Brad received his Bachelor of Laws at Queensland University of Technology and is well known in Brisbane.
His firm posted a social media tribute today:
“It is with deep sadness that we share the news our friend and Partner Brad Russell tragically drowned in the surf last weekend during an ocean surf ski event.
“Brad was a highly regarded expert in insurance and corporate risk management, and a Partner of our firm for 23 years. As the Head of our Insurance and Corporate Risk (ICR) Group, Brad was known for bringing his deep industry knowledge and an innovative approach to risk and insurance advice for the benefit of his clients. He particularly specialised in the resources and maritime sectors.
“Fuelled by his passion for innovation, Brad was instrumental in establishing and building the firm’s diversified business Allegiant IRS, an insurance broking business working alongside our ICR group to provide an integrated legal and insurance service offering (a controlling interest in which was recently sold to the AUB group). Brad’s legacy will live on in McR’s innovative culture and challenging ourselves to do things differently.
“Brad was larger than life and he died doing what he loved, in the surf competing in an ocean event. He was passionate about water safety and was on the Board of Surf Life Saving Queensland for a number of years. No doubt that community are feeling his loss as we are at McCullough Robertson.
“But beyond all Brad’s achievements he was a great friend, mentor and colleague to all who had the privilege of working with him. He was a dedicated husband and father, and our thoughts and condolences are with Brad’s wife Melinda, and his sons Harry and Charlie.
“Rest in peace Brad, you will be missed.”
Brad’s funeral will be held on Thursday, 15 August, at St John’s Cathedral, Ann St, Brisbane at 10am. It will be livestreamed via St John’s Cathedral website.
