Simon says prepare for rollercoaster

There will be a bit of ‘Simon says’ at the second Better Call Sarah event for student members on Wednesday, 7 August.

Panellist Simon Playford, Senior Legal Counsel at the Heart Foundation, will answer questions, offer advice and share stories with law students on his journey to the profession at Law Society House, Brisbane.

The series, which kicked off in April with the inaugural event, will again be hosted by Future Leaders Committee Immediate Past President Sarah Plasto.

Proctor asked Simon and fellow panellist Erin Walford, Corporate Counsel for Domino’s Pizza Enterprises, what advice they would give to their younger self.

Simon said the pace of the profession stood out for him when he began his career.

“Starting out in law, I was gobsmacked by how fast-paced and dynamic the field is,” he said.

“I wasn’t quite prepared for the rollercoaster ride of constant learning and adapting, which still happens daily!

“If I could give my younger self a piece of advice, it would be to embrace the chaos, stay curious, and remember that every challenge is an opportunity in disguise! You’re not alone!”

Erin said looking back she would advise her younger law student self “to act with confidence (even if you might not always feel that way)”.

“Give everything your best shot, that continuous improvement and learning is a life-long pursuit, and every meeting is an opportunity to build your community,” she said.

You can register for the 5.30pm event, which is aimed at young lawyers to help shape their futures and connect with industry insiders,  here.
