Hear NSW expert on coercive control laws

New South Wales Women’s Safety Commissioner Dr Hannah Tonkin will share reflections on the NSW experience at a free seminar Criminalising Coercive Control: Experiences in preparation and implementation next week.

The Department of Justice and Attorney-General is hosting Dr Tonkin on Monday, 30 September, as Queensland prepares for the new laws to criminalise coercive control.

The seminar will provide practical guidance on how government and non-government organisations can make necessary preparations before commencement in 2025.

Leaders from across the sector will also take part in a panel discussion about the opportunities and challenges for Queensland.

The free event runs from 1pm to 2.30pm and in-person tickets are limited.

Before starting as the NSW Women’s Safety Commissioner in 2023, Dr Tonkin worked as an international human rights lawyer at the United Nations, as the Director of Disability Rights at the Australian
Human Rights Commission, and as a barrister in London and Adelaide.
