Queensland’s first Indigenous judge will deliver this year’s James Cook University (JCU) Mayo Lecture.
District Court Judge Nathan Jarro will present An Aboriginal Perspective (from the Bench) at JCU’s Townsville campus later this month.

Judge Jarro, who identifies as Ghangalu on his father’s side and Bidjara on his mother’s side, will focus on indigenous representation within juries.
His Honour was called to the Bar in 2004, holding appointments to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Mental Health Review Tribunal, and Aboriginal Land Tribunal. He was appointed to the District Court of Queensland in 2018, making him at the time the only Indigenous judge in Queensland.
The lecture is named after foundational law staff member Marylyn Mayo. It will be held on Friday, 27 September, from 6pm to 7pm, at the Bebegu Yumba campus in Townsville, with a networking function to follow from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. It will also be livestreamed.
