The value of one-on-one mentoring was on show at a sold-out networking event in Brisbane on Wednesday.

The Meet The Profession: A Speed Networking Event, organised by Queensland Young Lawyers and The Legal Forecast, and attracted 60 lawyers and law students to Law Society House.

Queensland Young Lawyers President Beau Foley said the free event gave law students the opportunity to network outside of the law firm environment, and to talk to lawyers and barristers from all practice areas to find out what life in law was truly like.

Ashworth Lawyers Director Amy Soong took part as a mentor and said she was impressed by the ambition and initiative shown by the students.

“Some students were only in their first year but yet had the interest, foresight, and courage to step out of their comfort zone and attend an event like this,” Amy said.

“All the students I met were confident, well spoken, and showed a genuine passion for law.”

The Brisbane solicitor, who is a member of the Queensland Law Society Wellbeing Working Group, said she was impressed by the young leaders helping to organise such an event, which was co-hosted by QLS.

“For mentors, the event was an opportunity to chat to other lawyers and also gain some interesting insights from our next generation of legal professionals,” she said.

“For students, the event helped answer some of their questions about practice and gain advice about career opportunities.

“Overall, it was a fun night and a wonderful initiative in helping students build their network at an early stage and bridge that gap a little bit more between the study of law and legal practice.”

Participants also included University of Southern Queensland Law Society President Frank Kabalu, Griffith University Law Students’ Association President Madysson Cocking, QUT Law Society President Laila Bowden, and QLS Future Leaders Committee President Helen Driscoll.
