Former human rights chief to talk AI

A former Australian Human Rights Commissioner will deliver a thought-provoking lecture for the Queensland Council of Civil Liberties (QCCL) this week.

Professor Ed Santow will focus on the intersection of AI and human rights when he presents QCCL’s annual Derek Fielding Memorial Lecture in Brisbane on Thursday, 24 October.

As Commissioner between 2016 and 2021, Ed led initiatives on AI, technology and human rights, and dealt with issues related to refugees, migration, LGBTIQ+ rights and national security.

He is now Director of Policy and Governance at the Human Technology Institute at the University of Technology Sydney.

Ed’s expertise spans digital government, AI regulation, facial recognition technology and digital identity. He has advised numerous Commonwealth and State Government advisory bodies and non-profit boards.

The lecture, named after a prominent Queensland librarian, will be held from 6pm to 8pm at All Saints Convention Centre in the Brisbane CBD. It will also be livestreamed. Tickets here.
