Independent journalist from Singapore, Kirsten Han, will speak at the next fundraiser for the Julian Wagner Memorial Fund (JWMF) and Australians Against Capital Punishment (AACP).
The Kirsten Han: Sharing Stories from Death Row in Singapore event will be held on Monday, 25 November, at 5.30pm at the College of Law, level 5, Wesley House, 140 Ann Street, Brisbane.
Kirsten will speak about her work as part of a local Singapore NGO, Transformative Justice Collective, in opposing the death penalty in Singapore.
In recent years, Singapore has continued to hand down the death penalty and to carry out executions, in most cases, for objectively minor drugs offences.
In 2023 Singapore courts handed down six death sentences and carried out five executions, including that of the first woman to be hanged in almost 20 years.
Kirsten won the Portside Review (Perth) 2024 Human Rights Essay Prize for her essay on the city-state’s fight against drugs, Singapore Will Always Be At War.
The event raises funds to assist JWMF in providing bursaries to support Australian volunteers going to work to support capital defence lawyers overseas.
Tickets are $55 and $45 for students.
