Course focuses on colleague support

Registrations for the popular Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for Legal Professionals Course are open, with the first training for 2025 scheduled to run next month.

QLS Legal Workplace and Culture Consultant Stephanie Cowie is an accredited MHFA trainer and will present the blended course on 26 February.

The Standard Mental Health First Aid for Legal Professionals Course teaches participants how to provide initial support to a co-worker or client who may experience a mental health problem or crisis, until professional help is received, or the crisis resolves.

Stephanie said statistics showed that one in three lawyers reported depression and that law students and members of the legal profession exhibited higher levels of psychological distress and depression than other community members.

“To help reduce these statistics, we encourage QLS members to do some MHFA training. The MHFA for Legal Professionals Course is tailored specifically for those working in either a professional or support role in the law,” she said.

“Doing the course can help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health in the profession, as we know early intervention and prevention can help.

“Firms or teams can also request bespoke sessions for their workplace. Information and expressions of interest regarding the bespoke sessions can be found on the webpage.”

The 12-hour course consist of a blended learning approach which includes on-line, self-paced eLearning (five to seven hours), followed by a four-hour, face-to-face session.

On completion, practitioners will receive a digital Certificate of Accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider. Accreditation is valid for three years.

The course earns practitioners four CPD points.
