About 9000 sensitive court files were downloaded from the NSW court website on Tuesday in a “major data breach” being investigated by cybercrime detectives.
NSW Police said apprehended violence orders and affidavits were among the documents downloaded from the NSW Online Registry Website, which is administered by the Department of Communities and Justice.
It said the State Crime Command’s Cybercrime Squad had begun an investigation under Strike Force Pardey, and “investigations remain ongoing to establish the full extent of the breach”.
NSW Attorney-General Michael Daley said the breach was detected during routine maintenance of the website.
Mr Daley said it would be about a week before police knew the “exact nature of the data that was viewed by the hacker” but added that none of the affected data had appeared “on the dark web or anywhere else”.
The origin of the hack was not yet known.
