New digital phone system for prisons

Queensland Corrective Services is replacing its analogue phone system with a digital system which will allow prisoners better access to legal practitioners.

An additional 154 handsets will be installed across the state to cater for more prisoners, with the Common Auto Dial List to be expanded at each centre depending on needs.

The new phone system’s benefits will include clearer calls, cheaper call rates, and recorded warnings about a prisoner’s legal obligations under a Domestic Violence Order.

Amendments to the Corrective Services Act 2006 make the use of redirection services (Engin) for personal calls unlawful. These calls will be blocked from mid-2025.

However, these changes do not apply to communications between a prisoner and their legal representatives, including a lawyer, parole board, ombudsman, and inspector of detention services.
