The Honourable Justice Erin Longbottom of the Federal Court of Australia will present on the value of professional service beyond the courtroom in the first of this year’s Modern Advocate Lecture Series (MALS).
The series returns for its eighth year on 10 June, continuing to provide junior practitioners with practical advocacy skills directly from the judiciary. This complimentary session is designed to help early career lawyers refine their courtroom approach and understand what the Court expects.
Her Honour will reflect on how contributions through pro bono work, legal reporting, and involvement in institutions like the Supreme Court Library Committee uphold and support the integrity of the profession.
Justice Longbottom will share insights from her own legal journey, highlighting how these acts of service shape not only a practitioner’s path but also the wider justice system.
Her Honour was welcomed as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia in Brisbane on 21 February 2025 but started her appointment on 20 December 2024.
She graduated from the University of Queensland in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons). In 2003 she was admitted to practise as a barrister and in 2019 was appointed Queen’s Counsel.
The MALS event also offers an opportunity to network with peers and engage directly with the speaker in an informal setting.
Whether attending in person or via livestream, participants can gain valuable insights to strengthen their advocacy and deepen their understanding of the broader responsibilities of the modern legal professional.
Registrations are now open, with limited in-person spots available.
