PDs support coercive control changes

Practice Directions were issued by the Chief Magistrate yesterday to support the legislative amendments Criminal Law (Coercive Control and Affirmative Consent) and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024, which started on 26 May, 2025.

New Practice Direction 10 of 2025Evidence Act 1977 Part 6C – Limits on publishing information in relation to sexual offences – Division 3 – Publishing identifying matter in relation to defendants – Division 4 – Complainant privacy orders: This practice direction accommodates the inclusion of applications for non-publication orders for pre-committal sexual offences and the new complainant privacy orders. 

It also repeals PD 4 of 2023 – Non-publication orders – Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 1978.

PD 4/2023 now appears in the ‘Repealed’ tab of the same page.

Practice Direction 1 of 2025Summary proceedings for domestic violence offence – Brisbane Magistrates Court: This practice direction is amended to include DFV Diversion Orders.
