Striding ahead for access to justice

A sea of brightly coloured caps and shirts bobbed along George Street this morning for the annual Queensland Legal Walk in Brisbane.

Held on National Pro Bono Day, the walk is not only a LawRight fundraiser but one of the Law Week activities staged around the state.

The Brisbane crowd headed off from the QEII Courts just after 7am following the welcome to country by Songwoman Maroochy. 

The several hundred strong group of walkers then completed a 5km circuit across the Goodwill Bridge, along South Bank and back across Kurilpa Bridge.

Walks were also held in Cairns, Townsville, Toowoomba, Gold Coast, Ipswich, the Sunshine Coast and Tamborine Mountain.

The event has raised has more than $128,000 for LawRight, which improves the lives of vulnerable people by increasing access to justice.

Each year, more than 22,000 pro bono hours are donated by more than 800 lawyers from 65 firms, 170 barristers and 140 law students.

LawRight Patron, the Chief Justice of Queensland, the Honourable Helen Bowskill participated in today’s Brisbane walk along with Deputy Chief Magistrate Anthony Gett.

Highest fundraisers were Level Twenty Seven Chambers and Clayton Utz (top teams) and Dayle Buckley (individual).

Ipswich walkers, including Magistrates Walker and Kahlert, headed off from the Ipswich Courthouse. Practitioners from local firms, the local bar, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Queensland Community Corrections and also court staff took part.
